Student Council

Coordinator: Ms. R Carroll

The Student Council is an integral part of Coláiste Mhuire life. Students from all years put themselves forward for leadership roles and are elected on to the Council. The Reps on board see it as one of their main aims to represent the views of their class mates on matters of general concern to them and to show that by getting involved they can make a difference. One of our 1st Year Reps recently stated that she got involved so she could help make small changes and that it was a way of getting to know students from other years.

The Council who meet weekly, work to involve students in the affairs of the school and to foster partnership between all in the school, staff, students and parents.

Training is given regularly to clarify their roles and to develop leadership skills. The present Council group with Justin and Emily at the helm have chosen respect as their theme for the year. The 5th Year Reps are presently linking with the 1st Years in a Buddy/Mentoring programme. Checking in regularly with them, organising games and activities and generally making themselves available to help them in their transition to secondary school life.

Some of the activities the Council team has been involved in and are currently working on include:

  • Consultation on various policies: IT, anti-bullying, uniform
  • Comhairle na nÓg
  • Clean-up initiatives
  • Energy aware promotion
  • Promoting and assisting with Seachtain na Gaeilge
  • Various fund raising activities for school requirements and the wider community
  • Various wellbeing initiatives

If the Reps are not working on their action plan, they are on standby to help with various day-to-day tasks and duties.

Pooling the skills of those involved we have an effective Student Council encouraging responsibility and leadership and making a positive difference.
